Do you think water is good for your hair? When you want to fix your hair do you just get it wet? Do you let it air dry or never dry it before you style it because you think that this way is better for it? I hear this a lot. "I don't dry my hair. Why do I have damage?" "I am always styling it without heat. I am so good to it. " This isn't true... water is actually harmful to your hair. Styling it wet or not drying it will actually make your hair break. This is why...
Water has the pH of 7 and you hair and skin have the pH of 4.5 -5.5. This means that water is alkaline to hair. So every time you get your hair wet you are slightly damaging it before it is dry again. WHAT? Yes, water isn't good for hair. Now I am not telling you not to wash your hair. That is gross, unsanitary, and just plain eww! PLEASE SHOWER! I am just saying that every time you wash your hair and style it wet without drying it, you are actually harming your healthy hair.
Do not get me wrong, we need to wash our hair every 2 to 3 days. Environmental toxins get absorbed into your hair and make it greasy and stinky. But washing your hair everyday or more than once a day is excessive and harmful to your hair. After you wash it, dry it before you style it. If you are putting your hair in a ponytail right after you shower, your wet hair (that is more brittle than dry hair) will break and cause you to loss color and integrity.
You are probably thinking, "I don't want to damage my hair, but I definitely don't want to be gross and stinky either." Between hair washes you can use a product called dry shampoo. It is an aerosol spray that goes on the scalp and in the hair. It traps environmental toxins and absorbs the grease. This will save you both time and money. You will only have to wet to dry style your hair every other day, and you are not wasting your shampoo and conditioner.
If your hair takes a long time to dry or tangles easily when wet, you should always dry your hair as soon as possible and not let it air dry very often. This is a sign of porous overly damaged hair. Drying your hair immediately with a leave in conditioner or thermal protectant is the best thing to do.
I am not saying not to wash. I am saying wash, then start taking care of yourself. I just know that this a myth I hear all the time at the salon. Be beUtiful and take care of U!
